MBS Board Meeting - December 15, 2009 - Approved

Meeting was called to order at 7:07 PM.  Present: Mary Russell, Glenda Jungquist, Larry Oreschnick, Terry
Bishop, Rich Ferber, Norma Amundsen, Cheryl Sykora,  Dale Krueger, Chris Pogliano, Ken Ellis, Jim
Etten, Melinda Hampton and Lionel Flood.  Absent: Jeff Lorch and Phil Bohl.
November board minutes were approved for publication.

President’s Report:  Mary handed out the 2010 board contact list and asked members to check the
information for corrections.

Treasurer’s Report:
 The board reviewed the final figures in the 2009 budget. Rich pointed out the club’s
treasury at year end is in the black .  He has asked each committee to prepare a budget for the next board
meeting.  Financial documents only have to be kept for 10 years , Rich reported.

1st VP/ Programs Report:
 Terry requested suggestions for  2010  general meeting programs.  Some of
the ideas were  bonsai pots , making slabs  and a vendor program.

2nd VP/ Workshops Reports:
 Glenda had a question about the spring master workshop with Dennis
Makishima  and  his schedule for that weekend.  The master coordinator was asked to check with Jim
Gremel to see if there was a possibility of supplying material for his fall workshop. Glenda will set up a sign-
up sheet for ordering wire from Jim.  

Committee Reports:
Bonsai Basics: Cheryl has given Van Jensen the teaching material for  bonsai basics. Lionel  Flood, who
will be co-teaching the class with Van, had questions about average attendance and the class schedule.

Auction: The date for the spring auction has been set for  Saturday June 19 from 9-3.  The program
chairman will contact the church for setup.

Brochure: The final draft of the brochure will be sent to Claude Worrell for printing.  The board agreed on a
printing of 9,000 brochures.

Old Business:

Winter Banquet: On January 23 at Broadway Pizza for $12.95 club members will gather to enjoy friends,
food and a white elephant auction.

Club Phone: Glenda now has the numbers for the club phone and will answer  bonsai/club questions from
the public.
Church Storage Locker:  Glenda, Chris P. and Terry have volunteered to clean out locker at the Feb.
general meeting.  They will label shelves for better organization.

PA system:  Dale described the system he and Terry has chosen which will be about the size of a legal
briefcase.  They are now looking at wireless microphones and shared information about battery operated
mics.

Documents for Historian: Mary  asked board members for documents of club activities for the club
historian.

Newsletter: Now available at the club website www.minnesotabonsai.com  and is also listed under .org.  
The board had a discussion about the change to just .org. Rich will look into the change as related to our
(not for profit) tax status.

New Business:
Arboretum: The Minnesota Arboretum is setting up a new directory  of plant clubs and societies who have
had  an association with the Arboretum.

Committee assignments: The assignment of  2010 committee position will continue at the January board
meeting.

Finances: The board was asked to pass a resolution to authorize the club’s president Ken Ellis and
treasurer, Rich Ferber to handle all financial matters dealing with the Minnesota Bonsai Society including
being the authorized signatures on all society accounts.  A vote was taken to approve and the motion
passed.

2010 President: Ken spoke to the combined board about the coming year and thanked Mary for her three
years of service to the club formally asking her to continue on the board as  Past  President. Ken asked the
board for positive suggestions to improve the club.
